At age 5, almost any ballet school will be fine. Check the phone book under "dance instruction". If you want to be sure you are enrolling her in a reputable school, you can ask some of these questions:

How old is your youngest student on pointe?

If the answer is anything less than 12, I would strongly discourage you from taking your daughter there. It is VERY dangerous for a girl younger than 12 to be on pointe.

Tell me about your staff.

A reputable, professional school will not have high school students teaching classes, unless they are only assisting with the classes with an actual teacher present. Most of the teachers should have a degree in dance and/or have performed with professional companies.

How long is a class for a five year old?

Unless it is a combined class (some schools have ballet and tap combined into one class section), a ballet class for a five year old should be no longer than 45 minutes. Half an hour is probably more appropriate. Anything longer is pushing the students too hard. The school is probably more interested in turning out professional dancers than about the welfare of their students.

A lot of this also depends on whether your daughter wants a career in dance or if (as I suspect) she just wants to take it for fun. There are many studios that cater to recreational dancers (some better than others mind you).

Hope this helps some. Good luck - I hope your daughter enjoys ballet as much as I do!
